Fable Developers Cut Dog Companion and Bet on Realistic Decision-Making
Yesterday's presentation at the Developer Direct event revealed the visual beauty of Albion, and today's additional behind-the-scenes information clarifies Fable's gameplay mechanics.
· Author: Michal FortynFans of the previous installments must prepare for one major change, as the faithful dog companion will not appear in the new adventure.
The Morality System in Fable Reflects Reality, According to Creators
Developers from Playground Games want to reflect the complexity of human society. Ralph Fulton emphasizes that in real life, there is no objective consensus on moral values, and therefore the game will not judge anyone using a simple halo or horns indicator.
A key element of the new mechanic is the necessity of a witness. If the hero commits a heinous act in private or in the middle of a deep forest without witnesses, their reputation remains untouched. Reputation only begins to form the moment the deed is seen by at least one other character.
The authors cite classic chicken kicking, which has become a hallmark for the Fable brand, as an example. If village residents see the player mistreating poultry, they will start calling them by an unflattering nickname and treat them with contempt, which subsequently affects quest availability or prices in shops in that specific settlement.
The decision to remove the dog from the game, which was an inseparable partner during exploration and combat in the second and third installments of the series, is likely to cause significant controversy. The creators justify this step by striving for a different experience focused on interaction with the human population of Albion and the technical complexity of simulating 1,000 unique NPC characters.
The game already looks very tempting, of course, but we will have to wait until autumn of this year.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't the dog appear as a companion in the new Fable?
The developers removed the dog to make players focus more on interacting with human characters and also due to the high technical demands associated with simulating a thousand unique NPCs.
How does the new reputation system work without the traditional morality indicator?
Your reputation changes only based on actions that have witnesses. If you commit a crime without witnesses, your reputation remains untouched, while actions seen by people will affect their behavior and shop prices.
Will chicken kicking still have a gameplay impact?
Yes, this iconic activity remains in the game, and if villagers see you doing it, you will earn an unflattering nickname and the contempt of local residents.
When can we expect the release of the new Fable?
According to current information from Playground Games, the game's release is scheduled for autumn of this year.
