Sony ramps up pressure on PlayStation 4 owners to buy PS5

A screenshot appeared on the X social network and subsequently everywhere else, showing a prompt for PlayStation 4 owners to upgrade their hardware. The text of the message strategically mentions successful titles from last year such as Ghost of Yotei, ARC Raiders, or Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, but primarily lures players with upcoming blockbusters.
2026 is set to be a breakthrough year thanks to the arrival of highly anticipated hits like SAROS, the espionage action title 007 First Light, the horror Resident Evil Requiem, but mainly the November release of GTA VI. The prompt also includes a QR code that immediately redirects the customer to current price offers for the PlayStation 5 console.
The motivation to switch is also bolstered by changes to the content being added to subscriptions and new games. From this year, the focus of regular game offerings is shifting toward PS5, while PS4 receives new additions less frequently. Everything is working in favor of the current consoles, which of course makes perfect sense.
The actions of Sony management leave no one in doubt that the era of one famous generation is definitively coming to a close. Through its approach, the company is making it clear that artificially extending the lifespan of older devices is no longer on its list of main priorities. Keeping thirteen-year-old hardware alive is surely an unsustainable luxury. Especially in this day and age.
